WHY FIBROMYALGIA GETS NO RESPECT Sexism, frustrated doctors, lack of education may
(NATIONAL) -- Ask anyone who has fibromyalgia and they will tell you they wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemy. It is a debilitating illness marked by almost constant pain and fatigue.Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome in which people experience long-term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues.
Some sufferers have said it must be what bone cancer feels like. Some have committed suicide after losing jobs, homes and marriages to an illness that leaves no outward signs on the body.
The syndrome was first identified back in the late 1800’s and for a time was called fibrositis.
Yet to this day, some doctors and other medical professionals doubt it is a real medical condition.
How can this be when physicians who come down with the ailment have no problem understanding it is quite real?
A new report by health.com says fibromyalgia has a credibility problem that may be due partly to how relatively new it has been discussed at the national level – the 1990’s – and partly due to sexism as well as frustrated doctors who cannot cure the ailment or treat it very well.
The report can be read here

Researching Different Fibromyalgia Causes | Fibromyalgia
Research has uncovered a lot of clues as to the cause and development of fibromyalgia. This has unearthed the fact that there are a lot of different types and subsets of fibromyalgia , thus demonstrating that there is more than one factor that causes it. Unfortunately, there is no consensus amongst the medical community as to what the real cause is. Therefore, it’s important to learn as much about these various causes as possible.
Genetics
Whenever one or both of your parents has fibromyalgia or another type of connective tissue diseases (i.e. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), you’re at a greater risk of developing it yourself. Also, if a sibling or a first degree relative (i.e. Cousin, aunt, uncle) has fibromyalgia, you cold be at a greater risk as well. Having said that, just because you’re at risk does not guarantee that you’ll develop fibromyalgia or if they do that it’ll be to the same degree of intensity as another person.
Physical Trauma
There is also a type of fibromyalgia that’s known as “post-traumatic fibromyalgia,” which is caused by trauma. This is because trauma will cause injury to your tissues and not everyone is able to completely recover from this. Therefore, some people will develop fibromyalgia because of it. In fact, a lot of doctors who treat fibromyalgia patients have found that most patients attribute their symptoms ‘ onset to some type of a traumatic event. This could be something as similar as whiplash or something as complicated as a long-term repetitive stress injury caused by something like typing or lifting.
Rheumatic or Connective Tissue Diseases
Rheumatic and connective tissue diseases are another common cause of fibromyalgia. This usually occurs whenever a person gets fibromyalgia and another disease, which may include:
Rheumatoid arthritis Lupus Polymyalgia rheumatic Psoriatic arthritis Sarcoidosis Thyroiditis Sjgren’s syndrome Reaction to silicone breast implants
One more insightful point concerning this study. In this case, even when the disease or disorder goes into remission the fibromyalgia will continue causing you pain.
Emotional Trauma
Why don’t we proceed with this short article. Catastrophic stress (i.e. The death or serious illness of a loved one, history of abuse, severe illness, war) can also cause fibromyalgia. Keep in mind that this is more than the daily stress that everyone must endure.
