THE IRON SWORD By Jocelyn A. Fox [Review]
One of the most exciting things to crop up in recent years is “Urban Fantasy”. I will grant that everything from vampire and paranormal romance to supernatural detective agencies end up lumped into the genre, but still, it offers a lot for the adventurous reader. One of my favorite sub-genres of urban fantasy is the cross of epic fantasy with the modern world and vice versa. That’s where THE IRON SWORD by Jocelyn A. Fox falls, and from page one the story draws the reader into a full and believable mixture of “our” world and another.
Tess O’Connor is expecting a relaxing break from college when she heads to her best friend’s for Thanksgiving break, but she is in for more than she even dreamed possible. Her friend, Molly, has a secret, one she’s kept from everyone—even Tess. It’s that secret that will draw Tess into an adventure that could very well cost her everything. Molly is special, and she has a special place in a existence not of this world. When she is called to her place by the Sidhe, Tess is caught in the crossfire and finds herself in the world of the Fae. And that’s the literal world, Tess had been pulled from the world she has always known across the veil and into the land of the Fae and the Unseelie Court. Here she must find herself, her own strength and her own way in a world completely foreign to her.
Fox has created an amazing world with The Iron Sword . I was caught in the story from the very beginning as things begin to slowly unfold I found I just couldn’t put the book down. The world of the Fae and the Unseelie Court are so well created that I was there, along with Tess, slowly discovering what was going wrong, and what that meant. Her characters are believable and once or twice I found myself talking to Fox (via the pages of the book), threatening her with dire harm should she kill off a favorite character.
The Iron Sword is a wonderful book, it offers us all a dream of something a little more. That sneaking suspicion that we could be the one to save—or destroy—a world, and that other worlds are out there, lurking just out of sight and if we look hard enough they will be there for us to see. I will be anxiously awaiting book two, I have a few Hershey’s kisses here as bribes, should any Glows wish to stop by with spoilers. If not I will just wait, impatiently, for more from this wonderful world.

Sookie knows something is not quite right and sees an 'ugliness' in the fae land and tries to warn off Earl telepathically, but of course everyone heard her. This is when Queen Mab appears and all hell breaks loose and the veil of beauty is dropped.

Sookie arrives with Claudine via the 'light' underneath a tree of, you guessed it, 'light' fruit or lumiers. *shrugs because I could care less about the spelling* Sookie steps into a world unlike she has ever seen before. Everyone is just so cheerful and oh so excited. Way too cheerful and way too excited. Sookie learns that Claudine is her fairy Godmother, whom she proceeds to tell, "If your job is to look after me, can I just say, you suck"? Imitating Lafayette: " Go on Sookie, with our bad, snarky ass self" *flips hair* Who should Sookie see next but an old friend from her days in Dallas. Barry, the bellboy, whom we last seen being thrown out a hotel room door by Bill, after he was bit by Lorena . Coincidence? I think not. Seems Barry has a fairy God 'mother' all his own, by the name of Lloyd. Yes, that's right, he's a dude, who's a god, who's a mother! It must be Barry's lucky day! The two God'mothers' leave the duo to talk and Barry seems to think he has only been there a few minutes when Sookie asks. Not blood likely, Barry. Along comes a woman with a bowl of 'light' fruit and offers them each one. They each take one but Sookie is hesitant when she sees how everyone is reacting to the fruit. I will show you rather than tell you my opinion on this particular piece of fruit. Our Sook is growing up! She informed him, "Granddaddy Earl, that was twenty years ago" Poor Granddaddy Earl, he looks as if he is finally waking up from a long, long dream. Sookie, if I were you I would run for the nearest exit or better yet seek out 'Glenda the good witch of the North' to zap you right out of there with the help of some ruby slippers, because you sure as hell are not in Bon Temps anymore. There is something rotten in the state of Doucheland!
