City of Dyersburg Fourth of July fireworks display needs a new home

Fireworks are as embedded in American Fourth of July tradition as barbecues, family get-togethers and apple pies. However, this year the city of Dyersburg will have to find a new home for its fireworks display as the city school system has requested that the fireworks be held elsewhere.

"We felt that there were better options and better places to hold the fireworks rather than at the high school," said incoming Dyersburg City Schools Superintendent Neel Durbin.

The change comes after the school system evaluated the legal issues of having the fireworks at the high school as well as the cleanup and repair costs.

"The cleanup has not happened in a timely fashion over the last two years and the damage to the roof has also been substantial and that cannot be controlled," said Durbin. Although the repair costs to the roof was covered by the school's insurance, other repairs such as the school's lawn mowers, which were damaged due to delayed cleanup efforts, have to be paid by the school system. In addition, recent legislation changes by the Tennessee Municipal League brought about concerns that the pyrotechnic operators may not be fully in compliance with the new legislation.

Gerald Ketchum, who is a certified pyro-technician by the state of Tennessee, and has been doing Fourth of July fireworks for the city of Dyersburg as well as the city of Trimble for many years, feels otherwise. "I am in compliance with TML, the fire marshal as well as everyone else in the state that I have to be in compliance with," said Ketchum.

Legal concerns aside, the cleanup and repair effort was the biggest contributing factor to requests that the fireworks be held somewhere else. According to Ketchum, the Dyer County Sherriff's Office Litter Program is responsible for the cleanup. This year is the first year that the cleanup effort will be under the responsibility of Sheriff Jeff Box.

Fourth of July fireworks for the city were first held at Okeena Park when it was a golf course prior to the establishment of Dyersburg State Community College. After the establishment and expansion of DSCC it was necessary to find a new home for the fireworks display due to concerns that the pyrotechnics were damaging the building roofs. In 2008 Dyersburg High School agreed to allow the fireworks to be launched from its campus, which is an excellent location according to Ketchum.

Why the Increase in Short Sales in Connecticut ... - Home Selling Team

The share of distressed sales, both short-sales and foreclosures, surged relative to TOTAL sales in Connecticut and other New England states during the 1st quarter. With no tax credit in 2011, fewer traditional sellers are on the market and entering the sales mix. Foreclosures sales rose from 8% of total home sales to 20% in the first quarter of 2011 as compared to the 2nd quarter of 2010. During that same time-frame, short-sale rose from 8% to 12%. The two combined accounted for almost 1/3 of all home sales taking place in the current market.

In the 1st quarter foreclosures were discounted below market value by an average of 28% while short-sales were estimated to be selling for about 18% below market value. I think a brief definition of what a “short sale” is and why the increase in these types of sale might be helpful in education the local readers and homeowners of Tolland, Windham and New London County.

What is a short sale? A short sale is a transaction in which the lender, or lenders, agrees to accept less than the mortgage amount owed by the current homeowner. In some cases, the difference is forgiven by the lender, and in others the homeowner must make arrangements with the lender to settle the remainder of the debt. Why is the number of short sales rising? Due to the recent economic crisis, including rising unemployment, and drops in home prices in communities across the nation, the number of short sales is increasing. Since a short sale generally costs the lender less than a foreclosure, it can be a viable way for a lender to minimize its losses. A short sale can also be the best option for homeowners who are “upside down” on mortgages because a short sale may not hurt their credit history as much as a foreclosure. As a result, homeowners may qualify for another mortgage sooner once they get back on their feet financially.

The rapid increase in the number of short sales, and the short sales process itself present a number of challenges for REALTORS®. Major challenges include: As a result of these challenges Realtors® have reported difficulties with: unresponsive lenders; lost documents that require multiple submissions, inaccurate or unrealistic home value assessments, and long processing delays, which cause buyers to walk away.
