Train keeps chugging along
Poway, California - If you are in steam trains, the Poway Midland Railroad could be just the ticket for you.
The railroad operated from 1907 Baldwin steam locomotive engines in the city of Poway, San Diego County since 1997. It runs on a half-mile of narrow gauge (42-inch-wide) trail around the perimeter of Old Poway Park. Although the train is owned by the town, volunteers make it work.
"I love what I do and I get paid a million dollars when I see a smile of a child," said Douglas Williams, a volunteer who is qualified to work as a conductor, a fireman and an engineer.
Because the railroad passes through a city-owned park, watching the work is free. Taking a tour will cost you a small fee - $ 2.50 for adults and only 50 cents for children. Most weekends, people can be found by taking pictures of their family with the train behind them, or enjoying a picnic while the train travels its circuit.
Kim Keelin is a volunteer with her husband, James.
"I think the job of firefighter is the most difficult," she said of the volunteer positions. "As a firefighter, you have to do much fiddling with the train. You have to keep track of the fire and the water and during the light-up there's a lot of stuff to do."
She got interested in trains because of her husband's interest. She said it took her two years to qualify at all three volunteer positions and likes doing things woman weren't allowed to do years ago on steam trains.
Visitors ride in a passenger car built to simulate an 1870s-style car. The replica was built by Charles Pollard, a former owner of the locomotive who ran it on the grounds of his machine shop in Vista, Calif. John Porter purchased the rolling equipment in 1966 and moved it to Poway. Porter also built a mock station and train barn on his property, part of which became Old Poway Park.
The city bought the train, rolling stock and the area of the park the track was on in 1987. After 10 years, the train was fully restored by volunteers and began operations in 1997.
A few years ago, the city built a new depot where passengers can purchase tickets and souvenirs. The train barn houses all the equipment when it is not running on the main line.
"The locomotive requires a lot of maintenance," said James Keeline.
Every year the steam locomotive has to undergo an inspection by a state agency to ensure the boiler is in proper condition.
"We'll take it apart and put it back together again," Keeline said.
