Computer crash disrupts service at NJ Motor Vehicle Commission offices

A system-wide computer glitch disrupted service at New Jersey's 39 Motor Vehicle Commission offices for about 90 minutes this morning, spurring officials to extend hours at several locations so affected customers could be accommodated.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the problem. A similar glitch that occurred earlier this month had disrupted computer services at several state agencies, but it wasn't clear this afternoon if the two instances were connected.

MVC Spokesman Mike Horan said MVC and state technicians were working on the problem, which had blocked workers from accessing license, title or registration information. The computers went down around 10 a.m. and were back in service by 11:30 a.m.

MVC offices usually close at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, but Horan said some would likely stay open to service customers.

Here's an I told you so! They bought IBM's virtual tape library product a few years ago. The salesman made a really good sales pitch. I said "But this creates a single point of failure that will bring the whole mainframe down if it stops. Storage is dirt cheap. Lets get rid of the tapes altogether and put all the datasets online, raid 0, and we'll be much better off.". But no one listens to me. "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM!".
