As Seen On TV Products: Do They Really Work?

Bakersfield, California - You've probably seen more than your fair share of infomercials, but have you ever wondered, do these products really work? 23ABC of Elaina Rusk became a mad scientist and has conducted several scientific experiments.

Rusk was using the Aqua Globe self-watering on his inside for indoor plants two months, and so far it is not working. She said that the soil absorbs the water in a matter of hours, not a slow release for two weeks as advertising infomercials.

But she and her assistant, Rachel Shaterian, were pleasantly surprised by a few of the As Seen On TV gadgets they tested in the kitchen.

The first gadget on their list, and perhaps the most recognizable product, was the Slap Chop.

While it's fantastic for chopping garlic and small veggies, it doesn't slice an onion, skin and all, as well as the host Vince makes it seem on TV. They had to chop the onion into smaller chunks before the Slap Chop could dice it, but there was a noticeable absence of tears.

"You're usually crying by the time you're done cooking an onion, and that's never fun!" Shaterian said with a laugh.

Next on the list, the Salad Chef, a large bowl with a grater right on top for slicing veggies. It's great idea in theory, just place the veggies on a grater and they fall right into your salad bowl. But once it was time for the taste test, the tomatoes were a bit mushy from being smashed. Not so great for a product that cost more than $40.

"Is that a tomato you would want to use on your salad?" Rusk asked.

"No!" Shaterian responded immediately. "That would be a good salsa tomato."

However, on firmer veggies like cucumbers, it was great.

"It's not that hard to use. It's pretty fast, and you're not getting a bunch of things dirty," Shaterian said.

Their favorite product was the Egg Genie.

Just use the small needle on the steamer to poke a hole in the top of the egg, add the right measurement of water depending on how many eggs you're cooking, put on the lid, and wait for the buzzer.

"It tastes like an egg, it smells like an egg," Shaterian said. "I would use that!"

For $20, they agree, it's worth every penny.

Finally, the product that was a total bust, the Pasta Boat.

It took longer to microwave the pasta, with 30 minutes on the clock, than it would have to boil it on the stove, usually about 10 minutes.

They spent more than 20 minutes cleaning, only to have nothing to eat for dinner. Good thing it only cost $10. "This is the result of the pasta boat!" Shaterian said with a laugh, stuffing a sixth soaking paper towel into the trash.

Running the river, finding swamp slobs

As usual, I stopped and scooped them up and threw them in the bow area of the boat. It struck me that the swamp rat that threw them overboard to form a floating cluster must have been cleaning the floor of his boat before he got back to the landing.
