Choir's pride swells like teen spirit
LIKE miners and rugby players, male voice choirs have always warbled their way into the handbook of essential Welsh stereotypes.
For the past 40 years no English television producer has been capable of making a programme on Wales without sticking a pile of old chaps on top of a mountain to croon Gwahoddiad.
Turning this valuable tradition into a cliche has made us rather dismissive of the male voice choir. In the same way as our coal heritage has been played down by those wanting to project a cooler Cymru, so choral males were deemed naff Taff in the 21st century.
It took outsiders to recognise the immense importance of mining to modern Welsh identity – Joan Bakewell was among those eulogising Big Pit when it was given the Gulbenkian Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in world tourism. And it has taken an insider – in the dynamic form of choral maestro Tim Rhys-Evans – to convince Welsh youngsters that male voice choirs are relevant to their generation by creating Only Boys Aloud.
The fabulous teen spirit of these Valleys boys could be seen and heard in Treorchy’s Parc & Dare theatre last night as the choir for 14 to 19-year-olds celebrated its first birthday with a sell-out concert. I was proud to say I Was There, not just because Only Boys Aloud are living and lively proof that one of our most precious traditions can move forward, but because when I was their age I loved being part of a male voice choir too.
Before there are any queries on gender realignment procedures, I should point out I played an instrument with a male voice choir rather than joined the second tenors. My best school mate Philippa and I were flute soloists for Llantrisant Male Voice Choir throughout our teenage years.
Playing in concerts across Britain, we got the gigs through our music teachers who were respectively the conductor and accompanist for the choir. At a time when our contemporaries were grooving to Wham! in their Levi’s 501s, spending Saturday night with 40 old men in polyester blazers singing Speed Your Journey might not have seemed the height of adolescent cool, but we had an absolute ball.
For one thing, there is no better route to a sneaky underage snifter when you’re 16 than having it bought for you by a 60-year-old bottom bass. Granted you were at the mercy of their alcoholic choices, but I certainly didn’t complain about my first illegal drink, a brandy and Babycham supped post-concert to the sound of Comrades In Arms at, of all places, a police social club in Portishead.

They may have a thoroughly modern repertoire, but they are the keepers of a flame that first burned in the industrial valleys of the 19th century. So, rather than dismiss it as a cliche, let's revel in our rich tradition of Welsh men and song.
