Troup County authorities arrest four on arson charges

Authorities in Troup County have charged four people in connection with a series of suspicious house fires last month.

Reginald Robertson was arrested Thursday in Evans County and charged with first-degree arson. His Mountville-Big Springs Road house was one of five homes set ablaze May 30. Robertson told authorities he was at his permanent residence in Statesboro, Ga., that day, but investigators said they can place Robertson in the area shortly before the blaze began.

Three women who lived in the house, Erica Williams, Maxine Cameron and Vitina Robertson, were charged as parties to the crime "due to their prior knowledge of the fire, as indicated by the removal of their belongings from the residence prior to the fire," Sheriff Donny Turner said in a news release.

Investigators on Monday executed a search warrant in Meriwether County and found several personal items belonging to the women.

“In the midst the investigation, we learned that this house had a large amount of accelerants placed inside the residence," Turner said. "It was further revealed through our investigation that a number of parties had insurance policies on the home at 177 Mountville-Big Springs Road and its contents.”

Turner put the total amount of the insurance policies at about $235,425. He said investigators were investigating the other four fires and may file additional charges.

Keep in mind that even though it may be a Buyer’s Market, many Sellers are already priced at their break even point or lower and can’t afford to reduce their sales price any more. If they must sell, they’ll either have to work out a short sale with their bank or risk going into foreclosure.
