Rummage sales go high tech
MILWAUKEE - Gone are the days where the newspaper was your main source for finding and listing rummage sales.
"Now people are using the internet to get their information about their rummage sale out. Its effective and it's free, and everybody likes that," said Jon Olsen, owner of MilwaukeeConsumer.com.
Olsen says Craigslist is the most popular website to find and post rummage sales because everyone knows it.
"But those listings are done in a list format, so you have to page through different lists to find ones that are in your area. It can be overwhelming."
Other websites, like Yard Sale Treasure Map, pull information from Craigslist and plot rummage sales on a map. You can click on a listing and see the details about the sale on Craigslist.
If you're hosting a sale, "you want to do as much as you can to promote it," said Olsen.
Olsen recommends posting online and putting up the more traditional signs in your neighborhood.
"That will get the people who aren't necessarily planning to go, but are driving by."
And the latest way to rummage is on your smartphone.
"There's an app called iGarageSale and it's available for the iPhone and Android phones. You can just pull it up on your phone and it'll locate where you are and then will show the different rummage sales in your location," explained Olsen.
