Kin recall victims as '3 beautiful people'

HARMONY -- The night that Ralph Bagley learned his daughter, Amy, was valedictorian of Dexter Regional High School, he pulled her to his side and told her he was proud of her.

"She said, 'Dad, there were other kids that were smarter than I was, but they didn't put the effort into it,'" Ralph Bagley said Thursday afternoon at his home in Harmony. Amy Bagley Lake's parents still have the gold medal, preserved in a frame, that she received for graduating first in her class in 1991.

Her mother, Linda Bagley, has saved mounds of her daughter's items: a sweatshirt from the University of Maine at Farmington, where she graduated with a 3.93 grade point average, out of 4.0; red and white gloves and a winter hat that she wore to sports games in Dexter; and a white shirt with blue lettering earned at Maine Dirigo Girls State.

Lake's parents and two brothers, 41-year-old Jeff Bagley, of Parkman, and 35-year-old Rob Bagley, of Fairfield, spoke for the first time publicly Thursday about the shooting death of Lake and her two children, Coty, 13, and Monica, 12.

Police say Lake's estranged husband, Steven Lake, 37, of Wellington, killed them Monday at their Dexter home. He then killed himself.

"We're going to miss them all tremendously. It will be an empty void forever," Rob Bagley said.

Her family said they wanted Lake, 38, to be remembered for who she was: an outgoing, caring, strong, energetic person.

She was a well-behaved child, her mother said. "She was a very calm, easygoing child. Her feelings would get hurt easily. You had to be careful not to look at her sternly," she said.

She was also a brave, athletic child. At Harmony Elementary School, one year she was the only girl on the baseball team.

In high school she was in so many activities -- varsity basketball, field hockey and track, plus National Honor Society, mathematics team and French club -- that there were only two days one school year that she didn't need to drive her parents' Buick in order to stay after school, her father said.

She hosted a French foreign exchange student, Chantal Astolfi, and the following year visited France. Astolfi was in her exchange sister's wedding.

Ralph Bagley recalled his daughter's perseverance running relay races on the high school track team, which set school records.

"Her heart was for gold, not for silver," he said.

I love love love the Case Study Day Bed from Modernica, but we need something closer to a full than a twin (http://modernica.net/case-study-v-leg-day-bed.html)

I would suggest a daybed with a good twin mattress, rather than a sofa bed. If you are going to be sleeping on this nightly, you really need to be concerned about the quality of the mattress on which you will be sleeping. You can also get a trundle daybed, if you want the space for a guest; alternatively, you can use the space underneath for storage.

I lived in studios for many, many years. Back then, I arranged my queen bed parallel against the wall with lots of pillows so that it looked like a daybed. It saved a lot of space because it wasn't jutting out into the room, but I still got the benefit of a "proper" bed.

Is this something you'd consider doing with your double bed? It could be a back-saver! You could forego the box spring and put your mattress on this bed frame (which I have and LOVE) that provides OODLES of storage space underneath:

Thanks for the suggestions! As far as size/price restrictions, I'd like something around the size of a twin bed for under $1000 (around $700 would be ideal). I just moved this week and my current full size bed takes up 75% of the bedroom. I might end up downsizing to a twin, but I was thinking daybed so it would be a nice piece of furniture that could move with me when/if I get a bigger place. I realize it's tough to find a daybed comfortable enough to sleep on every night!

That Lubi is the most uncomfortable thing to sleep on. My daughter has one and it's in "my" room. I hate it....anyway, not sure of your style but this is what I did..scoured used furniture stores, bought 2 identical foot-boards for twin beds, footboards because they are smaller and have a finished look on both sides, put slats and a twin size mattess, and lots of throw pillows...it is the most comfortable daybed I've ever had. I did splurge and buy a daybed cover from West Elm, linen and it gives it more of a sofa look.
