Malta church to dedicate new piano at event

MALTA -- One local church wants to inspire its musicians and future generations through the tones of a grand piano.

The newly acquired Baldwin grand piano will be dedicated at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Malta United Methodist Church.

"We have eight young people in the congregation who are taking piano lessons," said Deanna Bentley, herself a pianist and organist, who is married to church's pastor, Bill Bentley. "The leadership committee of the church felt we needed a good-quality baby grand piano to encourage the church's youth to play. The committee felt it important to encourage an upcoming generation of musicians to serve in this church and churches wherever they may live during their lives."

Having set a goal, the members of the church began to raise funds to buy a baby grand piano for the church.

"I started out by knitting baby booties to sell to raise funds for the piano," Bentley said. "Another church member, Opal Hopper, began knitting sets of hot pan holders and dish cloths to sell to raise money for the piano."

A mother of a young piano student came up with another fundraising idea.

"Kelly Raines came up with the idea of dividing the piano into parts and asking members to donate the money to buy the different parts of the piano. They made a chart showing the 88 keys, three pedals and the bench, listing the dollar amount to buy each of the parts. As the donors gave money, their name was placed on the key or part of the piano that they had donated," Bentley said.

Through a twist of fate, the congregation was able to acquire not just a baby grand piano, but a parlor grand piano.

"We were short of the $8,700 required to buy a new Yamaha baby grand piano. Dr. Richard Wetzel offered to sell us a parlor grand that he had purchased and hired to be restored in memory of his late wife, Arlene," Bentley said. "Dr. Wetzel sold us this piano for an amount of money that we had raised, and we were blessed by having a full parlor grand, something we never dreamed of being able to acquire."

The parlor grand piano was made in 1930 by the Baldwin Piano Co., of Cincinnati. It was completely restored by Don Prior, of Belpre, who restores, rebuilds and tunes pianos, as well as having been a longtime music teacher in the Morgan Local Schools.

A potluck dinner will be at 6 p.m., followed by a piano recital at 7 p.m. Sunday.

"The recital will feature piano players from the congregation, both children and adults. It will also very appropriately conclude with music played by Dr. Wetzel, a longtime faculty member of Ohio University's college of music, who allowed us to purchase this piano," Bentley said.
