"Mr. Popper's Penguins": What happened to Jim Carrey's career?
You can't blame Jim for a bad box office full of movies. Ask Martin Sheen or Barbara or any of the Hollywood lefties. They spout their mouths off like we care what they say which turns people off, many many people. They've played so many characters they probably don't know who the hell they are anyway.
Carrey wasn't that funny anyway. If he couldn't contort his body he's still be doing SNL.
It's not just Jim, Lady GAGA spouted off not long ago and she sold under 200 g's of her latest cd. How pathetic is that for all the media force they gave? Hollywood will never figure it out because they just hang around themselves 24/7.
Sadly, sketch comics like Jim Carrey who mostly rely on youthful physical athleticism & flexibility simply do not age well. Look at Robin Williams; although at least he's always had a stand-up act, unlike Jim Carrey. But physically? no longer funny. Same goes for Woody Allen, & all the Monty Python group after they reached middle age, with the possible exception of John Cleese. Jim Carrey should probably retire, just stick to voice work from now on or develop a 2nd career doing character parts. Unfortunately, his days as an effective leading man in comedy films is over. I say this, BTW, as a recently turned 50-year-old.
Furthermore, you listed a bunch of Carrey's more serious films, admitted most of them were very good, but then slammed them for not making enough money -- which is well outside critical concern. Then you admitted that you hadn't really done your research as to where they fell in terms of their financial success. It is quite possible that some of them (such as "The Cable Guy") generated headlines not because they lost money, but because they didn't make nearly as much money as projected. A movie can be considered a disappointment if the studio is counting on it to be a tentpole but it only turns out to turn a modest but healthy profit. I'm pretty sure "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" were financially just fine, in terms of not showing red ink, and I wouldn't be surprised if "Sunshine" were a giant success within its lower-budget realm. Problems with "Philip Morris" have been well-documented as being related to the fact that the movie was shelved and was never given adequate marketing due to its subject matter. All of this is neither here nor there in terms of an assessment of Carrey's abilities or placement in the annals of stardom.
