Senior spellers prove spelling bees no longer for kids

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) -- Spelling bees aren't just for kids. This weekend, senior spellers will be competing in the annual AARP Spelling Bee. Susan Hartner hopes to repeat as a winner. She took the senior spelling crown in 2007, the last woman to win. She says it's not a matter of intelligence but of eidetic memory. And yes, eidetic is one of of the words she's been memorizing. Eidetic memory is better known as photographic memory. AARP expects about 50 competitors this year, at the spelling bee being held in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Welcome.

Schlumberger Building Regional Service Center in Cheyenne ...

Construction is expected to begin this summer and should take roughly a year. Once operational, the service center located in the Cheyenne Logistics Hub, the industrial area of the Granite Peak Development’s Swan Ranch , will employ about 50 technicians and engineers.

“It’s a regional center with permanent jobs,” said Randy Bruns, chief executive of Cheyenne LEADS, the city’s nonprofit economic development corporation. “We’re very excited about that.”

This industrial component is the first phase of development at SWAN Ranch and will total 1,300 acres. In addition to Schumberger, a pipe manufacturing and coating company has committed to the Cheyenne Logistics Hub. Earlier this year, construction on a 30-acre plant to produce wind towers in the Swan Ranch area was announced, and several other companies have expressed interest in this area due to the access to two Class I railroads and two major interstate highways, I-25 and I-80.

The proximity to the Front Range and I-70 is also a bonus. Logistically this location makes sense for manufacturing and distribution companies.

Schlumberger maintenance facilities of a similar nature will be located in Texas and New York, will provide service to customers in booming oil and gas fields in and near those states.

Schlumberger said the Cheyenne center will provide services to customers in the emerging Niobrara Shale play in Wyoming and Colorado, among others, as well as locations in Utah, North Dakota and South Dakota.

“The Niobrara oil has everybody talking, and depending on how that develops, the jobs and activity will go where the resource is,”  Bruns told Wyoming media . “What we’ve focused on are those types of facilities that aren’t dependent on the Niobrara necessarily, but are regional in nature and provide permanent jobs. This certainly fits our criteria.”

Cheyenne LEADS played a role in selecting the site and brokered the purchase of the 10 acres of LEADS-owned land in the park. In its announcement, LEADS said the project to get the Schlumberger facility to Cheyenne was “one of the more complicated and detail-oriented projects’ the economic developers have done.
