Bruins and Burgers and Beers, Oh My!
I first learned of Big E Ales when dining at Mountlake Terrace’s Red Onion Bistro earlier this year. My glass of Big E’s root beer then proved a powerful pint of flavor. Curious about the Lynnwood brewery’s other creations, I ventured to the source for dinner this week.
On your first expedition to Big E Ales , you might overlook it on the drive-by. Both my dining companion and I independently did just this on our initial visit. Positioned at the far end of a small strip of warehouse storefronts on a quiet stretch of 208 Street SW, the Ellersick Brewery and its Big E Ales public house didn’t immediately catch our attention.
As it would turn out, our roadside view of the brewery was somewhat obscured by the impressive line-up of patrons’ parked cars outside. It was Game #7 of the Stanley Cup , and Big E was clearly a popular choice to cheer with brew in hand, silver ale-making apparatus behind glass in the background. Perhaps due to the crowd gathered for hockey madness, the one-cook kitchen and slim waitstaff seemed stretched thin on the evening of our visit. However, although our waits were lengthy, the servers’ congeniality was beyond reproach.
Game-watching and after-work gabbing kept the main dining area abuzz, and my dining companion and I opted for a quieter front section table. Of note, minors are allowed throughout the establishment with the exception of the bar counter.
Big E offers a few weekly specials, and on the Wednesday of our visit we scored 10 “Jumbo Wings” for $3.99. I may need to do more research on relative size of chicken wings as those we received seemed to be of average proportion, and certainly not “jumbo.”
Though perhaps a bit underwhelming in size, the wings did not disappoint with respect to temperature, texture and taste. Arriving at the table still hot to the touch, the wings boasted lightly crisped skin and juicy, tender meat. Whereas we had our choice of a half-dozen basting sauces, I kept things classic and opted for Big E wing sauce and blindingly white blue cheese dressing. The wing sauce proved to be a tasty classic Buffalo-style varietal with mild heat, appropriately messy as all get-out.
My hamburger obsession in full effect , I had been craving a burger all day. With no small amount of enthusiasm, I selected Big E’s Blue Cheese Burger ($6.99) for my supper. Though the server tempted me with a knowing, “Everything’s better with bacon…” I passed up the pork add-on due to last week’s oink-o-rama at The Winged Pig . Gotta give those piggies a break!

(HealthDay News) — Young children whose moms suffer from depression are at heightened risk for behavioral troubles, but a new study shows that day care may help ease the risk.
The effect was seen even when kids were placed in day care for as little as three hours a week, the Australian researchers said.
However, the benefit was only seen with formal child care, not informal care such as leaving the child with a relative for the day, according to a study in the July issue of Pediatrics.
