Old Louisville home gets opulent makeover

HOMEOWNERS: Dr. Shiao Woo and John Shaw-Woo. Shiao Woo is chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and a professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. John Shaw-Woo is a former Macy's human resource executive. They live with their beloved canine companions, Basil, Ginger-Blu, Pepper and Sage.
HOME: A 4,000-square-foot home with three bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms in Old Louisville.
DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS: Renovated lower level complete with bar, dining area and sitting area; third-floor guest suite with bathroom, sitting area, full kitchen and spacious bedroom; saltwater pool and outdoor living area; music room; lush landscaping; and four working fireplaces.
APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! Shiao and John said they were pleased with the work provided by Tassels; Joe and Kathy Larson, who created the stained-glass window; Brecher's Lighting; Kentucky Mirror and Plate Glass; Jose Arellanos of Arellanos Painting; Color Surface, which painted the concrete floors in the lower level; and Horchow, where they purchased some of the items featured in the master bathroom.

The foyer is more than just a welcoming space. They chose to open it up in order to use it as a cozy seating area that flows into the living room; only columns identify the separation between the spaces. This allows for guests to mingle freely. An intimate gathering spot includes two burgundy easy chairs that face each other and two cream armless chairs with rolled pillows pushed together to form a loveseat. They embrace an oval glass table. A picture of Shiao and John hangs on the wall above the loveseat. Heated black marble floors give the second-floor master bathroom a pampering touch. Two entrances — one from the hallway, the other from the master bedroom — allow guests the privilege of experiencing this elegant retreat. A copper soaking tub adds an element of surprise, while a large walk-in shower with shelves displays collectibles. The double-sink chest vanity is topped with marble. Two sconces on the mirror add soft lighting. Guests are treated like royalty in the third-floor suite. Complete with a kitchen, small living area, bathroom and bedroom, this space gives their guests plenty of privacy. A fully functional kitchen features walnut cabinetry with Corian counters. Two bar chairs at the counter have cushions with beaded accents around the edges.
